Lennart Clerkx Ethical Coffee Importer
Hi I’m Lennart, a development professional turned entrepreneur. I’m originally Dutch, but grew up in 8 different countries. After studying marketing, I got into development studies, working with coffee producers in Tanzania and the Dominican Republic. Here, I was met with many frustrations about how the development industry tries to solve poverty. Truly equal trade, it turns out, is a much more effective way to help equalize the playing field for coffee growers.
It’s my goal to inspire everyone who adds value in the coffee chain – growers, roasters, baristas and passionate coffee drinkers. Together, we should help each other and add something to the world. An importer should simply facilitate communication and innovation, and find the best way to get the coffee from A to B. When people – and not corporations benefitting from a closed coffee trade – control the value chain, the coffee world immediately becomes a more equal, open place. This is what social enterprise This Side Up stands for.
