Maarten van Keulen Circular Economy Expert

Waste doesn’t exist. It’s a matter of perspective. There’s a purpose for every product, even after it’s initial usage. So let’s find these purposes, especially in a big and complex value chain as that of coffee.

My name is Maarten van Keulen and I am specialized in the implementation of circular economy principles in coffee, tea and cacao value chains. I look at the farm level, the logistics level, the roaster level, the consumer level and all the little and big links in between them. I take out the “leakages” of value, both in the environmental and social realms. Let’s stop wasting materials, but let’s also stop wasting talents.

Through the Circular Coffee Collective, I take businesses and organizations on this journey. So where do you start, when you want to become circular? Let’s just start with your cup of coffee, and go from there. Coffee is an easy product to get these days, but the value chain isn’t quite as easy. When you’ve tackled this entire value chain, from beginning to the end, and have stopped all “leakages”, then you’re pretty well prepared for taking on the next product.
